chapter2
Corinna
As the sun rises in the sky, I cautiously walk out of the cave I’d been calling home for the past few weeks in my sand blonde wolf form. Sniffing the air, I begin to trot along happily when I find no suspicious scents around the area.
The birds chirp happily in the trees as I wander around the forest, keeping my snout to the ground as I attempt to hunt for my breakfast. I come to a clearing, immediately noticing a deer wandering the overgrown field gracefully.
Lowering myself I creep towards the deer slowly, quietly, only making myself known when I was a few feet away, I leap towards the deer which takes off in a sprint, I follow it closely. Within seconds, I’ve tackled it to the ground and dug my canines into its neck.
Once it stops trashing around, I begin to feast, eating as much as my stomach allows before abandoning my prey. Wandering back towards my cave, I notice my paws are now covered in blood and release a huff, knowing there is no lakes or streams in this area to wash in.
Since I fled from my pack, they’ve been hunting me restlessly. At first they’d find me every couple of days, somehow I managed to escape each time, most times with broken bones or deep gashes, which by now have turned to scars.
As more creatures became aware of the existence of a hybrid, the more I was being hunted. Although, I had also been offered some help over the years too. Mostly by witches, who were fascinated by natures newest creation because of this I quickly began to learn to use and control my gifts, which I had been struggling with before that.
Once my gifts were awakened, I found myself setting fires as I slept, toppling trees without the intention to and hurting people when I was scared or panicked, the last of course came in handy when those people were the ones hunting me.
Thankfully now I was in full control of my gifts, which meant I could use them to mask my scent, meaning I could stay in places longer without being found and protect myself when I was. I still wasn’t sure how I was being found when hiding myself so well, but because I was walking around with a giant target on my back, it made it harder to have any long term connections.
At first I did try to connect, the problem with making friends, caring for people who care for you in return, is that they want to try protect you, I learned my lesson after one too many losses.
As I reach the entrance of my cave, I shift back, my bones crack loudly, the noise echoes through the cave making it louder then usual until I’m back standing on two legs. I stretch myself out as I wander deeper into the cave, my eyes are still able to see perfectly regardless of the darkness of my surroundings.
When I find my bag pack sitting in the corner where I sleep, I open it up pulling out a dirty white summer dress and pull it over my head, the material stops a few inches above my ankles and does nothing to hid the fact my boobs are bare underneath but it’s the only clothes I have, other then the outfit I own for when the colder seasons hit.
Deciding that I need to bathe, I grab my scuffed black boots, stuffing my feet into them before swinging the small canvas bag pack over my shoulder. I wander out of the cave and begin my journey to look for a new shelter near some kind of water supply.
After about an hour of walking I get bored of this form, removing my boots I tie them to my bag pack using the laces, then slip off my dress shove it into the bag in a ball.
When I’m on four legs again, I take the bag into my mouth and take off in a sprint. By time I come across a stream the sun is starting to set, dropping my bag I walk up to the stream leaning my head forward to take a drink. I shift back onto two legs, grabbing the familiar steel canteen from the bag and filling it before sliding my bare body into the water.
After I wash away the dirt, blood and sweat that has gathered over the past few weeks, I crawl back onto the bank beside the stream knowing that it’s too awkward trying to find a sheltered place to sleep while it’s dark out. Instead I decide to sleep as a wolf on the river bank.
My eyes snap open from my peaceful rest when a twig snapping echoes through the wooded area near me, my ears perk up listening for any other sounds to indicate that what I’m hearing is more than just another animal in the woods.
I receive the opposite information when I hear a woman’s soft cries, I take off toward the sound as fast as I can until I’m close enough to see a short tanned woman with long curly red hair struggling against a pale man with silver hair who is covered in blood and pinning her to a tree by her neck, her feet barely touching the ground.
A low threatening growl erupts from my chest, gaining the man’s attention, he examines my wolf for a moment before he rolls his beady black eyes.
” This is none of your concern dog. ” He speaks not looking at me anymore, but back at the woman who has tears running down her face.
Taking a few warning steps forward, I growl once again, announcing his last chance to leave here alive. The man, or should I say vampire, before me lets out a huff of annoyance before tossing the woman to the ground carelessly. He turns toward me.
” Are you going to leave so I can enjoy my meal in peace or do I have to kill you? ” The man doesn’t even make eye contact with me as he speaks, instead he inspects his bloody finger nails.
As a response, I start to circle his figure growling, making it known I’m prepared to attack at any moment. Finally he stops looking at his hands, paying attention to me now. I push off the ground, leaping towards him to make the first attack.
Within seconds I’m on the ground after being tossed against a tree, that no doubt is now cracked significantly. I stand up, shaking the pain away before launching myself at the vampire once again this time, taking a chunk out of his leg.
As he starts to heal, my bones crack making it known that I am shifting back. A sick smirk takes over his mouth as his eyes rake down my naked form, only fuelling my desire to end him.
” Changed your mind dog? ” He questions, his smirk never faltering.
” Not for a second. ” I answer simply, flicking my right hand while quickly muttering one word in Latin.
I watch as his body collides with a tree, the same way mine did only moments ago. He leaps to his feet with inhuman speed, looking at me with shock.
” That’s impossible. You’re a dog! Dogs can’t do magic! ” He cries.
” Correction I’m a wolf. Only have wolf though. ” I inform, flicking my index and middle fingers downwards while muttering more Latin.
Loud cracks echo through the woods along with the groan that...

escapes his lips as his halls to the ground with two broken legs, before he can heal I hold out both of my palms in his direction, chanting now.
He begins to scream loudly. ” You feel that? That’s the blood you drained from those innocent people and it’s turning to acid, burning away at your insides. ”
Continuing to chant, his screams get louder along with my words until he breaks out into a coughing fit. I watch with narrowed eyes as he crawls onto all fours, coughing up the blood of his victims. After a minute or so I turn my hands so that my palms face the star covered sky, stopping my chants to speak another singular word in Latin.
His body flips so that he his laying on his back with his arms stuck to his sides, I walk over to him, placing my foot on either side of his body before I kneel down to straddle him. I hold my hand out above me and spit out another word in Latin. A branch flies into my hand, I snap it in half.
The vampire’s beady black eyes widen as he glanced at the wood that was now sharp enough for what I needed. He opens his mouth to speak but before he can get a word out, I jam the wood directly into his heart. His skin slowly fades into a deep grey and the white of his eyes turn as black as his pupil.
As I strolled away from the now dead vampire, my eyes searched the area for the woman who had been attacked. I found her behind a tree with her knees pulled to her chest and her face buried into her legs as she cried.
As I slowly approach her, I clear my throat softly to make my presence known. Her head snaps up, her hazel eyes wide with fear. I hold my hands up as I take another step towards her, but that makes her cry harder.
” Please.. Please don’t hurt me. ” She sobs.
Instead of continuing toward her, I pause a few feet away from her, lowering myself to the ground. ” I’m not going to hurt you. ” I promise her, keeping my voice soft as I speak.
” My name is Corinna. ”
The woman’s sobs calm slightly. ” How do I know you won’t hurt me? You killed him . ” she cries pointing in the direction of the vampire’s corpse.
” I wanted to protect you, that’s why I did what I did. ” I reply.
My words seem to slowly register in her mind, when they do she calms down a little more. ” He murdered my friends… ” she whispers.
A frown forms on my lips. ” I’m sorry for your loss. If you don’t mind me asking… Why were you and your friends so far out in the woods? ”
” It… It’s my 18th birthday tomorrow and I wanted to go camping and… ” She begins to cry again. ” My friends didn’t really want to come, but they knew how much I wanted to go and… It’s all my fault. ”
Carefully I move closer to her, when I’m close enough I lean over and touch her hand gently. ” It’s not your fault, you couldn’t have known. ” I mumble.
She flinches slightly at my touch but doesn’t move away like I expect her to. ” What’s your name? ” I question.
” Giovanna, Just call me Gia, it’s easier. ” She gives me a half smile.
” Okay Gia, let’s get you out of here so you can go home. ” I stand to my feet, watching as Gia’s tan face goes red.
At first I’m confused but then I remember that I’m completely nude, I give her an awkward smile before wandering off back to the stream where my bag lies, I grab my dress and toss it over my head before making my way back to a very lost looking Gia with my bag on my back, when I reach her I hold out my hand for her.
She takes hold of it, allowing me to help her off the ground. After Gia told me what direction she thought her campsite was in, we began walking.
Thirty minutes of walking passed, I turned my head to once again check on Gia who looked quite pale and clammy. As I examined her more, I noticed her breathing was fast and uneven, at first I thought it was from our journey but I began to feel concerned from her appearance.
I open my mouth to ask her if she is okay but am cut off when she collapses to the floor, I immediately kneel beside her. Somehow only now I can smell it, the blood. Scanning over her body, I spot the darkened material on her leggings.
” Why didn’t you tell me you were hurt Gia? ” I demand, grabbing the bottom of the material on her leg, tearing it until I found the injury.
The top of her left thigh was sliced open, little bits of what appeared to be dirt was stuck in it but I couldn’t tell because of the heavy flow of blood. How did this even happen without her leggings being torn?
” I… When he came onto the campsite, I was in my underwear, I’d be changing for the night. I hear something to I came out of my tent and seen him killing one of my friends, I was trying to get to her, but I.. I fell and cut myself on a rock. ” she mutters to me, while she speaks, I’m reaching into my bag, grabbing a random item of clothing which I then press to her wound.
” okay.. I can heal this. It’ll take a couple days without herbs but I can fix this. ” I tell her, ripping a part of her leggings off then tying it around her thigh above the wound tightly. ” do you think you could manage to hold onto me if I shift? ”
Gia looks up at me confused. ” what do you mean? ”
” If I turn into a wolf, would you be able to get onto my back and hold onto me while I run? ” I clarify for her.
” I can try. ” she nods.
Pulling my dress over my head, I shove it into my bag which I then place onto Gia’s back. I shift into my wolf, then lay down in the dirt on the forest floor with my paws under my head, looking at Gia. She slowly crawls toward me and gets onto my back, not without struggle though.
When she is settled onto my back with a good grip on me, I take off in a sprint on all fours, leaping over fallen trees and zig-zagging between trees. It’s not long before we reach the river bank I had started the night off at, Gia rolled off of my back and I immediately shift back to tend to her.
Rolling her onto her back directly beside the stream, I then kneel beside her, by now the cloth she had been trying to keep pressed to her leg was long gone from our journey, I don’t bother to remove the piece of her legging that was probably the only thing slowing the blood flow. I use the stream to wash her wound as much possible, then move my hands to hover over her with my palms facing her leg, I close my eye, humming softly before I begin to chant.
